Superlux HD681 EVO - Unboxing

Don’t let the price fool you! Most of us judge any merchandise by it's price especially if we can compare them to popular brands, many claims that it's not the case for Superlux Headphones - let's see about that! I heard Superlux headphones before from friends and demo'd the old cans from stores and now I am owning my first ever Superlux cans, the Superlux HD 681 EVO. Since my unit is still in it's burning period (I probably clocked 30 hours) I will not put a review for the Sound Quality but rather this will focus on the unboxing and build quality.

Unboxing Superlux HD 681 EVO

The Box feels solid when I hold it, it feels expensive right there! The slip cover really looks and feels nice but when I saw the top and bottom part it's your regular brown carton box. A lot who bought HD681 complained about the slip cover that it's very hard to take off - it was! So instead of forcing myself to slide down the cover and take the chance to rip it off, I asked someone to help me pull it. Here's the box -

Not the best packaging of Superlux but I think they diverted the funds to the Sound Quality rather than the packaging, anyhow a pretty box won't contribute on the Sound Quality.

Inside the HD681 box you'll see -

  • Superlux HD681 EVO (mine's black, it also comes in white)
  • 1 meter headphone cable
  • another long headphone cable (I have not touched it since I opened the box)
  • carrying pouch
  • manual in different languages
  • 3.5mm stereo jack to 1/4" stereo plug adapter

It's just awesome that Superlux included a gold platted 3.5mm adapter, I am using FiiO E09K Desktop Amplifier and this amp does not have 3.5mm headphone input so the adapter is a welcome addition from the set. It also comes with a clamp that will hold the cable from the tip of the headphone to protect from accidental strip, i just don't know how much protection it can give.

The Clip
I also like the removable headphone cable, it's gives you an easy access to change from the 1 meter cable (desktop use) to the longer cable if you are going to use Superlux HD681 EVO in watching movies from your home theater. But the best use of removable headphone cable is - UPGRADE! You can buy the best 3.5mm extension cable and you're all set or DIY it - Neutrik plugs or Amphenol plugs plus silver cables and that's it, easy upgrade and it will give you (hopefully coz i have not tried it yet) a better sound signature

Superlux HD681 EVO uses adjustable headband and it fit's comfortably in my head. I don't have a big head so the bottom of the pads sits right on top of my jaw and gives me constraints after long use.

The build quality feels plasticky but for the price range it think it's already better. The headphone is big, really big! It sits right after the edge of my ears and my ears are big and it's nice because it felt comfortable for my ears since they are not being pressed. And yeah when you try to locate the left / right side you will notice that it only have a small red "R" inside the headband but at the outside you'll see some dots like braille and different for both sides.

At Php 1990, I wouldn't complain. I felt it's already a steal for the price. It's a nice looking headphone. Since I got it it's been sitting in my office desktop and is my main headphone unit. Sometimes it felt heavy and I have some complains over my neck but sometimes it does not. Maybe I'm getting used to it's weight. Initial impression on the SQ (un-amp'd + ipod classic)
  • the highs are clear
  • a little less mids
  • have controlled bass
  • leaning towards the warm side
Part II of the review will have detailed info on the Sound Quality, my Superlux HD681 EVO is still in burning period and I want to burn it more to see if there will be difference and give my final impression. So far I like it and became my main headphone in my office.

You can check out Superlux FB for details on where to get this rad cans!

  1. Superlux cans tend to be bright. Would you consider them overly bright based on your initial tests?

  2. Hey Melvin! No bro actually evo was not overly bright when I first tried it infact it's kinda warm because the mids were not very forward and the highs are just right. It's not piercing bro but I am still in burn in period and hopefully I'll get the sound that I am expecting.

  3. Just tried it from a store nearby. I'm not an audiophile but I can say that it sounds good enough for me. Can't wait for your Sound Quality review so I can know whether cop it or let it pass. Thanks!

  6. Does it need at least a portable amp? or no difference if directly used on ipod?

    1. ipod has good sq, directly connecting 681EVO will already satisfy your sonic indulgence but by using amp, it will give you range, the lows will become lower and the highs will have some improvement.
